Getting to Honey Grove
The town sits on US 82 in the eastern part of Fannin County. SH 56 runs through it as Main Street, and SH 34 heads south toward Ladonia. From the courthouse square in Bonham it's about 18 miles, a little under half an hour.

Water, sewer and septic in Honey Grove
The state has put money into both of the city's systems.
City water from three wells
The city pumps groundwater from three wells about 1,700 feet down in the Woodbine sand. In 2025 the state funded 7,850 feet of new water line and a storage tank to cut water loss.
Rural water north and west
Past the city limits, Bois d'Arc MUD covers the north and west sides, including most of the land around the lake, from its office on FM 1396. It runs on Woodbine wells too.
City sewer on old clay pipe
The state's 2024 funding review found the city's sewer lines are mainly clay pipe that lets in a lot of groundwater and rain. A $16.87 million project doubles the treatment plant and replaces lines, with construction scheduled from fall 2026 into 2028.
Septic out on the county roads
Fannin County's environmental office in Bonham permits septic systems outside town. New subdivisions on septic need lots of at least an acre, and nearly every new system in the county is a spray system.
An old town with older pipes
Honey Grove is one of the older towns in the county. Settlers arrived in 1842, and the stone city hall finished in 1889 is, by its state historical marker, the only original civic building still standing in Fannin County. Census estimates put a third of today's homes before 1960 and about one in six before 1940.
Houses that old often still have cast iron drains or galvanized water pipe, and both close up from the inside over time. Private sewer lines from those years are often clay, like the city's mains. The soil map around town is mostly Fairlie and Dalco clay, which the county soil survey says shrinks and swells with moisture, and that movement pulls at old joints.

Does Bois d'Arc Lake supply water to Honey Grove?
No. The lake belongs to the North Texas Municipal Water District, and its water goes to the district's plant at Leonard and into its regional system. Honey Grove's taps run on the city wells, and most of the land around the lake gets water from Bois d'Arc MUD's wells.
Who permits septic systems around Honey Grove?
Fannin County does, through its environmental office at 1203 E. Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham. We clear and repair the drain line from the house to the tank, and we'll tell you straight when the tank or the aerobic unit needs a licensed septic company.
What problems do you see most in Honey Grove?
Mostly slow drains and sewer backups in the older houses, and water heaters. If more than one drain is slow, or water comes up in the tub when the toilet flushes, the clog is usually in the main line.
